Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month: History & Celebration

History of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month:

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month has its roots in a pivotal moment in American history, marked by the recognition of the diverse contributions and experiences of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI). The journey towards the establishment of this commemorative month is a testament to the resilience and advocacy of these communities.

Origins of the Celebration:

The origins of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month can be traced back to the efforts of individuals and organizations dedicated to promoting the visibility and recognition of AAPI communities. In 1978, Congress passed a resolution designating the week of May 4th as “Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week.” This designation aimed to honor the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States on May 7, 1843, and recognize the contributions of Chinese laborers in completing the Transcontinental Railroad on May 10, 1869.

Evolution into a Month-Long Celebration:

Over time, the week-long observance evolved into a month-long celebration, officially recognized as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in 1990. The extension of the commemoration to a month was a response to the growing momentum of the AAPI civil rights movement and the need to encompass the diverse cultures, histories, and contributions of AAPI communities.

Recognition and Validation:

The establishment of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month symbolizes a significant milestone in the ongoing struggle for recognition and validation of the experiences and identities of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. It serves as a platform to amplify their voices, highlight their achievements, and address the challenges and injustices they face.

On UN Chinese Language Day and World Book Day every year, WuKong initiates the Wukong World Reading Month to experience the beauty of reading and carry out reading charity programs with students globally.

In this year’s Global Reading Month, we have selected a variety of traditional cultural storybooks. We have launched engaging global reading sessions in countries such as the United States, France, Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, and more, where we explore the fascinating world of reading together with children.

Go and experience the courage and responsibility in “Jingwei Filling the Sea,” and the humility and filial piety in “Kong Rong Giving up the Pears.”

WuKong World Reading Month activities 1

During the reading sessions, the teacher leads the children in reading fascinating Chinese stories, learning from the wisdom of human civilization found in these literary classics. Children actively share their thoughts with the teacher:

“I think Sun Wukong possesses an unwavering spirit. I want to be fearless and relentlessly pursue my own dreams!”

“I also want to learn from Kong Rong in the future and do my best to take care of my beloved family!”

The teacher encourages and praises the children for their insights, fostering a positive and nurturing learning environment.

WuKong World Reading Month activities 2

The underlying principles conveyed in the texts can provide nourishment and enrichment to children’s growth. WuKong World Reading Month aims to encourage children to develop good reading habits and appreciate the significance of reading. By immersing themselves in the world of books, children can broaden their horizons, enhance their knowledge, and cultivate their imagination. Reading not only offers entertainment but also stimulates critical thinking, empathy, and creativity. It allows children to explore different perspectives, learn from the experiences of others, and develop a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.

Altogether, to support international Chinese language education.

We hope that every book placed in the reading corner can become a “key”, and help children unlock new worlds through the power of reading. Through each charitable activity, WuKong aims to sow seeds of kindness in the hearts of WuKong students.

Every small act of love and goodwill contributes to making the world a better place. Education makes the world a more beautiful place. Thank you for accompanying us on this journey of spreading goodness to the world.
